Dave Pane, owner of The Refined Craftsman, installed kitchen cabinets in our first cottage

2021-11-29T22:06:32+00:00

Dave Span, owner of The Refined Craftsman and a proud graduate of the Palomar College Cabinet & Furniture Technology program, answered the call for help to install the cabinets Brendan Mathews’ Palomar College students built for our first cottage.  Installation of the base cabinets was on the critical path for the completion of our cottage.  Brendan was very busy with a big cabinet installation of his own, so Dave stepped in to install our cabinets on his day off.  The cabinet-making community is a tight-knit group of awesome people.  Thanks, Dave!

Santa Fe Roofing & Rain Gutters will supply rain gutters

2021-11-29T22:07:13+00:00

I am accustomed to hearing a “Yes” when I ask companies for help for our students and our veterans.  Sometimes I ask in person and I receive a ‘Yes” on the spot.  Sometimes I send emails with my plea, hoping that someone will respond.  I sent an email to Santa Fe Roofing & Rain Gutters to ask for a donation of rain gutter materials.  An hour later, Monte Stewart, owner of Santa Fe responded:  “Thank you for reaching out to Santa Fe Roofing & Rain Gutters.  We are very interested.  I will have my rain gutter manager Chris reach out to [...]

Option D Graphics donated Warrior Village Project banners

2021-09-30T19:27:17+00:00

When we transported our first cottage from San Marcos High School to Vista, we attached an awesome Wounded Warrior Homes banner to the front of the cottage for the world to see.  When we started planning our ribbon-cutting ceremony, I asked Gene Jennet, Assistant Director of Wounded Warrior Homes, where they got their beautiful banner.  He told me to talk to Monica and Aaron Snyder at Option D Graphics.  Monica patiently worked to help me figure out what I wanted and Aaron produced several designs for me to consider.  Monica quoted me a very reasonable price for my banner, but when [...]

ADUs for Veterans: Warrior Village Project

2021-10-22T00:35:33+00:00

From Garage Shed Carport Builder: The California-based Warrior Village Project is an effort to alleviate the problem of homeless veterans. Founder Mark Pilcher says the idea for the project was inspired by connecting two problems: the serious homelessness and housing affordability problem and the shortage of students coming out of schools into the building trades. Pilcher, who has a lot of experience with nonprofit volunteer work, felt he could help with the housing shortage and, in the process, get high school students interested in construction. His thought: What if high school students could build affordable housing while receiving training in building trades? “I [...]
