Living Spaces of Vista will furnish our first cottage

2021-11-29T22:05:37+00:00

Sara Kilburn, founder of Bridge Corps, introduced us to Kelly Bailey, Regional Commercial Account Manager for Living Spaces and Living Spaces’ representative to the Building Industry Association of San Diego.  Sara asked Kelly if Living Spaces could help us furnish the ADU we are building for Wounded Warrior Homes in Vista.  Kelly set the wheels in motion.  In no time David Pellillo, General Manager of Living Spaces in Vista, and his colleague, Interior Designer Razz al-Tekreeti, came to take measurements of our ADU and talk with Mia Roseberry about her requirements for furnishings.  Thank you Kelly, David, Raaz and Living Spaces [...]

Santa Fe Roofing & Rain Gutters will supply rain gutters

2021-11-29T22:07:13+00:00

I am accustomed to hearing a “Yes” when I ask companies for help for our students and our veterans.  Sometimes I ask in person and I receive a ‘Yes” on the spot.  Sometimes I send emails with my plea, hoping that someone will respond.  I sent an email to Santa Fe Roofing & Rain Gutters to ask for a donation of rain gutter materials.  An hour later, Monte Stewart, owner of Santa Fe responded:  “Thank you for reaching out to Santa Fe Roofing & Rain Gutters.  We are very interested.  I will have my rain gutter manager Chris reach out to [...]

The prize was announced at a schoolwide assembly that included educational leaders and Ramona Chamber of Commerce members. School leaders for a week had kept the award a secret from Jordan, who thought he was going to a Character Assembly. Harbor Freight selected three first place winners to receive $100,000 each; Jordan was among 15 finalists awarded $50,000 each. He will receive $15,000 [...]

Option D Graphics donated Warrior Village Project banners

2021-09-30T19:27:17+00:00

When we transported our first cottage from San Marcos High School to Vista, we attached an awesome Wounded Warrior Homes banner to the front of the cottage for the world to see.  When we started planning our ribbon-cutting ceremony, I asked Gene Jennet, Assistant Director of Wounded Warrior Homes, where they got their beautiful banner.  He told me to talk to Monica and Aaron Snyder at Option D Graphics.  Monica patiently worked to help me figure out what I wanted and Aaron produced several designs for me to consider.  Monica quoted me a very reasonable price for my banner, but when [...]

Advanced Tile donated tile for shower stalls

2021-09-30T19:25:20+00:00

Chris Geldert met Miguel Alvarado, owner of Advanced Tile, on March 22, 2021, at a house under construction in Encinitas.  The site visit was arranged for Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA) instructors by Barbie Davis of Mission West Builders.  Chris told Miguel about our program and the challenges we faced completing our cottages after SMHS had shifted to remote learning.  Miguel said that he wanted to help.  He visited our Wounded Warrior Homes ADU in Vista on March 30, and offered to install tile in the shower stall.  Unfortunately, by the time we had the shower stall prepped for him his [...]

ADUs for Veterans: Warrior Village Project

2021-10-22T00:35:33+00:00

From Garage Shed Carport Builder: The California-based Warrior Village Project is an effort to alleviate the problem of homeless veterans. Founder Mark Pilcher says the idea for the project was inspired by connecting two problems: the serious homelessness and housing affordability problem and the shortage of students coming out of schools into the building trades. Pilcher, who has a lot of experience with nonprofit volunteer work, felt he could help with the housing shortage and, in the process, get high school students interested in construction. His thought: What if high school students could build affordable housing while receiving training in building trades? “I [...]

So Cal Counterworks will fabricate kitchen countertop

2021-09-30T19:23:40+00:00

Arizona Tile donated a slab of granite for the kitchen countertops for our cottages.  But, a lot of work must be done to convert a slab into a countertop.  The slab must be cut to the desired length and width.  Holes must be cut for the sink and faucet.  Edge pieces are crafted and secured to the top, and the countertop must be polished to a smooth, glossy finish.  Chris Geldert reached out to Jarrod Wimpee for help.  Jarrod learned CAD/CAM skills in Chris’ class at SMHS and is now CAD/CAM Manager for So Cal Counterworks.  Jarrod asked Jade Rodier, President [...]

A1 Factory Direct Flooring will install flooring

2021-09-30T19:22:35+00:00

A1 Factory Direct Flooring has been a big supporter of Wounded Warrior Homes for many years.  When Steve Roseberry, co-founder and board member of Wounded Warrior Homes, asked Bob Chamberlain, President of A1, if A1 would help with the installation of vinyl plank flooring in our ADU, Bob didn’t hesitate to say yes.  There is a little ridge in the floor along the ‘marriage line’ where the two modules of our house are bolted together, and the subfloor has taken a lot of abuse in the last two years.  A1 has years of experience installing and repairing difficult floors.  Their expertise [...]

Students Construct Tiny House at Workshop

2021-08-30T23:32:28+00:00

From The San-Diego Union Tribune: In about a year, someone needing shelter could be living in a tiny house built by 25 Poway Unified high school students who spent the month before classes resumed on Wednesday learning the basics of construction. Some said they came into the free four-week Career Technical Education Builders Bootcamp workshop held at Mt. Carmel High School with exposure and experience with carpentry and home repairs. Others joined with no knowledge and had to learn how to use basic tools. But regardless of how much practical skill and knowledge they brought to the workshop, together they constructed [...]

Interior Specialties donates and installs drywall

2021-08-30T23:39:35+00:00

John Page, the owner of Interior Specialties, reached out to the Warrior Village Project, eager to help us with our drywall needs after being told about our project by Prevost Construction. John spoke to Nigel Smith, Manager of the San Diego Branch of L&W Supply, who agreed to sell Interior Specialties the materials for the job at cost. John offered to have his staff install the drywall, although their work schedule was so busy that it was going to be difficult to fit us in before September. Joe Fielding, Field Foreman, told John that he and his crew really wanted to [...]
