The Grainger Foundation was our first Sponsor, giving us a $5,000 grant to kick off our program at San Marcos High School.  In a demonstration of Grainger’s continuing support, Carlos Ramirez, the Manager of Grainger’s San Marcos store, sent me an email asking if we could use some tools, including a cordless DeWalt impact driver, a DeWalt drill, work gloves and utility knives.  The tools have found a home at Urban Corps new facility in Escondido, where young people working in Urban Corps’ Construction Services program can use them to build a Moveable Tiny House.  Thank you Grainger and Carlos for [...]

Doug Williams of WillCalc helped architect Michael E. Robinson design our first cottage to comply with California’s Building Code energy standards.  When the cottage was completed, Doug recruited New Earth Energy Specialists, owned by Phil Ortiz, to inspect the cottage to make sure that it complied with these standards, a required step before a house can pass its final building inspection.  We are grateful to Phil and his colleagues for donating their inspection services.  Phil is well known for his community service.  In addition to operating a successful business, he is an active community volunteer and has served on the El [...]

From the San Diego Union-Tribune: Montecito High School construction students won Best of Show in a design-build competition, and in the process, built storage sheds that will be donated to two Ramona organizations. Ten Montecito students competed against more than 250 students from 17 Southern California high schools in the Construction Industry Education Foundation Design Build contest held April 6 and 7 at the Orange County Fairgrounds. The Best of Show Award was given as a first-place prize. From KUSI News: SAN DIEGO (KUSI) –  Local nonprofit Wounded Warrior Homes to complete a new accessory dwelling unit for veterans with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury on a one acre property in Vista. This unit was donated from the Warrior Village Project and will be the fourth residence that they will be able to provide for a veteran.
