2023-07-27T19:04:12+00:00

From the Weyerhaeuser blog: In 2019 the Warrior Village Project, a nonprofit based in Southern California, reached out to our Giving Fund team hoping to get a one-time donation of building materials. The organization planned to use the materials to support its burgeoning program to teach San Diego-area high school students about construction trades through building affordable housing for unhoused veterans. What they got was even better. At the suggestion of our Giving Fund team, Warrior Village submitted an online grant application and received a $5,000 grant in 2019 and a $4,000 grant in 2020. Warrior Village volunteer Mark Pilcher was [...]

2023-06-05T16:19:27+00:00

From the San Diego Union Tribune: “For those of you who figure out that maybe college isn’t what you want to pursue, there is a ton of opportunity outside of college,” said Richard Johnson, general manager at Action Air Conditioning, Heating & Solar. Johnson was speaking to about a dozen seniors from Twin Oaks and Mission Hills high schools who were gathered at Action’s San Marcos warehouse to get an up-close look at one of the many non-college career options available to them. The work site visit was part of the new Promise 360 program started this school year by the [...]

From CBS8: ESCONDIDO, Calif. — If you're interested in a 'Tiny Home', the event known as Tiny Fest is coming to the Del Mar Fairgrounds this weekend. In this Zevely Zone, I met a new generation of tiny home builders. I went to the Escondido campus of Urban Corps of San Diego County to see is their newly built tiny house. At 170 square feet, their home may be small but it's doing big things. Last year Urban Corps members started with a trailer on wheels and built a tiny home from the ground up. North County groups, schools partner to help homeless veterans

2022-06-12T20:35:03+00:00

From the North Coast Current: North County groups, schools partner to help homeless veterans When Mark Pilcher read an article about the current housing crisis, he didn’t think about it as a one-sided story. He considered other reports about the rising costs of building materials, the number of veterans experiencing homelessness, and the shortage of tradesmen. For the retired Fallbrook resident, it was an ah-ha moment. “I saw these things around the same time and said, ‘There’s a solution where we can address all these issues,’” he explains. As a result, he founded the Warrior Village Project, which aims to build [...]

2022-12-25T17:47:49+00:00

Doug Williams of WillCalc helped architect Michael E. Robinson design our first cottage to comply with California’s Building Code energy standards.  When the cottage was completed, Doug recruited New Earth Energy Specialists, owned by Phil Ortiz, to inspect the cottage to make sure that it complied with these standards, a required step before a house can pass its final building inspection.  We are grateful to Phil and his colleagues for donating their inspection services.  Phil is well known for his community service.  In addition to operating a successful business, he is an active community volunteer and has served on the El [...]
